Registered Charity Number 1183168

U3A stands for the University of the Third Age, which is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. No qualifications are needed or given, it’s all about sharing the enjoyment of learning new things, meeting people and making friends.

Our U3A is a group formed in 1987 who get together for social events, outings, games, music, learning, and just enjoying meeting other people. Membership is open to everyone who is no longer in full-time work. We are a very friendly group of like-minded people which is still growing and new members are always welcome, and new activities to join are always coming along. These range from Antiques to Walking, catering for many interests and types of activity.

We are an independent, free standing charity affiliated to The Third Age Trust and became a Registered Charity in our own right in April 2019. Our committee members are now trustees of our charity. See link to Committee.

How are we organised?

The management of Newmarket U3A is vested in an Executive Committee, with up to 12 members, who are elected by the general membership at the AGM. (See AGM.) They carry out the general policy and provide for the administration, management and control of the affairs and property of our U3A. This committee meets on a monthly basis.

Two sub-committees support the Executive Committee: Activities and Publicity. See our Committee page for photos, names, and allotted roles of the current committee and sub-committees.

Who chooses the Group activities and how are they run?

Newmarket U3A operates within Newmarket and the surrounding villages of Cambridgeshire and Suffolk and group meetings are held at various locations within this area. Group activities are chosen by members. (See menu button at the top of the page GROUPS.)

In keeping with the U3A principle of "self help and co-operation", all group activities are led by member(s) of the Group acting as Group Leader. Input and support from members is always welcome and appreciated, as it this which makes our U3A lively and interesting.

We are part of the East of England network of U3As - see their details here: East of England U3A
